Manon van Kouswijk, recently relocated to Melbourne from Amsterdam, is giving a masterclass this weekend at Northcity4 in Brunswick. I haven't had the chance to see the new studio and workspace of Northcity4 yet, but I love that it exists!
Set up early this year by jewellers Katherine Bowman, Anna Davern,Caz Guiney and Ali Limb, along with glass and paper artist Romani Benjamin, it is a studio and workshop space with spaces for long-term studio tenants; short-term project-specific tenants or recent graduates, for that much-needed transition phase between leaving the well-equipped studios of an academic institution and setting up on your own; and pay-by-the-day or by-the-week access spaces for those who just need a little studio time occasionally. What a great idea! The jewellery community needs more initiatives like this.
Current tenants at Northcity4 include the founding board members, along with Nicky Hepburn, Jess Kelly, Inari Kiuru, Sam Mertens, Cass Partington and Naoko Inuzuka.
Now, back to Manon's workshop... This Saturday and Sunday, Manon will be holding the workshop Today Tomorrow, a process driven workshop that reflects on the relationship between jewellery and time. It's $285 for the two days, including materials.
Northcity4 also has a Graduate Opportunities seminar on Tuesday 17 July from 6-8pm, focusing on mentoring and training opportunities for recent graduates. The cost is $15; speakers will talk about the Jam Factory, the JUMP National Mentorship Program, and Project Space opportunities at Northcity4.
